The Youth Department is looking to build a passion for outreach and missions in the youth of the Diocese of Quincy. With that in mind, mission trips will be an integral part of the deparment's program
In July of 2007, 10 of us boarded Amtrak's City of New Orleans in Champaign, IL and traveled through the night to the Cresent City for a week-long mission trip. After spending Sunday worshipping with the congregation at The Free Church of the Annunciation and visiting the French Quarter, we were ready to get to work Monday morning. It was then that we learned the meaning of Fr. Jerry Kramer's motto: "Fluid... because flexible is too rigid.
There were plans for us to clean-out houses, but several days of heavy rain made that unsafe. So, the whole group spent Monday cataloging books for Broadmoore's neighborhood library. The books had been donated by several sources, but many had been brought down by Quincy's own Dcn. Phil Flemming, who the folks at Annunciation are threatening to keep on one of his trips down.
On Tuesday, we divided into two groups. One group stayed to finish cataloging the nearly 5000 books, and the other traveled to Lower Gentilly to work on finishing drywall in a house that had been under over four feet of water for nearly six weeks.
